About the Society
Estimate the yearly greenhouse gas emissions of your household, and see how much carbon dioxide (CO₂) planted mangroves can remove from the atmosphere. The results are estimates for awareness and planning; the method and sources are listed at the bottom of the page.

How the calculator works and sources
Each amount you enter is converted to a yearly amount and multiplied by an emission factor. Results are in tonnes of CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e), which also counts other greenhouse gases such as methane.

Charcoal and firewood are counted in full because much of the charcoal and firewood used in Somalia comes from trees that are cut and not replaced. Emissions from making charcoal in kilns are not included, so the real figure for charcoal is higher.
Flights use the great-circle distance from Mogadishu, increased by 8% for indirect routes, and include the extra warming effect of aircraft emissions at altitude (DEFRA “with radiative forcing” factors).
Mangroves: carbon stored in trees, roots and sediment is based on a global study of 40 years of mangrove planting (Song et al., 2023). Reforestation: about 4.2 t carbon per hectare per year in trees and roots plus 3.5 t in sediment; afforestation: about 3.1 t plus 1.6 t. One tonne of carbon equals 3.67 tonnes of CO₂. Growth on Somalia’s arid coast is likely slower than the global average, so the conservative option halves these rates. The area is calculated as surviving trees ÷ trees per hectare.
This calculator gives estimates for awareness and planning. It is not a certified carbon footprint or carbon credit assessment.
Help us understand coastal communities, marine issues and the impact of our work. Surveys ask for a few personal details (such as email, location, age group and gender) so we can analyse the answers; these are kept private and never published.

received in this periodHow this is counted: no cookies are used and IP addresses are not stored. A visitor is counted once per day, so a person who visits on three different days counts as three visitors. Staff who are logged in and search-engine robots are not counted. “Direct” means the visitor typed the address, used a bookmark or a link in an app that hides its source. Countries are estimated from the visitor’s time zone. Days follow Somalia time.

Private meetings never appear on the public website. Only people with a link – and the passcode – can see the details and join.
Choose the website default – the look every visitor sees first. Visitors can still pick another theme for themselves with the palette button in the top bar; their choice is saved only on their own phone or computer.
Edit the text of the Home banner and the About us pages. Choose a page, change the text and click Save – the website updates at once. People and partners are edited in Content.
The large banner at the top of the Home page can show photos and video clips as slides – one after another with a soft fade (videos play muted). The heading, text and buttons stay on top. With no slides, or when switched off, the main photo is shown.
Main photo
Shown first while the page loads, when there are no slides, and when a visitor pauses the slides. Use a wide landscape photo (at least 1600 px wide) with the main subject on the right.
Add a photo or video clip
Photos: JPG, PNG or WebP, landscape, up to 8 MB (made smaller automatically). Videos: MP4 (H.264) or WebM, up to 20 MB – best 10–30 seconds, 1280×720 or 1920×1080, no sound needed. The Clip maker (16:9 wide) can make banner clips.
Add a YouTube video
Paste the link of a YouTube video (for example from the SSMC channel). It plays muted, without controls. Note: YouTube may briefly show its logo, and it uses more data than an uploaded clip.

Automatic filter
Clean comments appear at once. A comment waits for approval when it contains a blocked word (also written with tricks like b4d, b.a.d or baaad), a link, an email or phone number, mostly CAPITALS or repeated letters – or after 3 visitor reports. Robots and floods (more than 5 comments an hour, the same text twice) are stopped automatically.
